Frequently Asked Questions

What's the history behind Grantley Hall?

Like many historical houses, Grantley Hall has a rich and colourful past with a myriad of tales to tell. Over the decades, the Hall has played host to royalty, Members of Parliament, celebrities and socialites. Originally built in the 17th century by Thomas Norton to celebrate his marriage, Grantley Hall stayed in the Norton family for over 200 years before being sold to Sir Christopher Furness in the early 1900s. His wife, Lady Jane Furness, was a keen gardener and created one of the earliest Japanese Gardens in the country using rocks from nearby Brimham Rocks. Their son sold the house in 1925 to Sir William Aykroyd, a carpet manufacturer from Bradford. Sir William was High Sheriff of Yorkshire and during his time in residence, entertained Queen Mary. During the Second World War, Grantley Hall was given over to the war effort as a convalescence home for injured airmen and soldiers from overseas and proudly welcomed Dame Vera Lynn as she sang to the troops. Upon Sir William’s death, the estate was sold to West Riding County Council who ran the Hall as an adult training centre. In 2006 the Hall was sold for use as a private residence but was often left vacant before being purchased by its current owner, Ms. Valeria Sykes in 2015. Grantley Hall has now been transformed into a luxury 5* hotel and wellness retreat after a 4 year restoration project.
