Location
Distance from Tambolaka airport

1h30m drive to Nihi Sumba.

A private helicopter may be chartered directly from Bali to Sumba Island, or from Sumba Tambolaka airport to Nihi resort.

Your immersion into Sumba life starts with the one and half hour journey from Tambolaka airport, leaving the bustling streets of Bali behind for a more Africa-meets-Asia experience. The journey starts at sea level and climbs to the rijewa mountain ranges at 500 metres. The spectacular scenery from peak to sky is framed by teak and mahogany plantations and thick Sumba deciduous forests. The road stretches down to Waikabubak passing through traditional settlements, the Sewah waterfalls and offers a canvas of rich green verdure; structured rice fields to river valleys and thick dense forests eventually leading to a glimpse of the Indian Ocean. The traditional market town of Waikabubak is situated 400 metres above sea level on a plateau and guests can often see water buffalo driven through the town on an evening drive. For the final part of the journey, you have magnificent views of the vast Wanokaka River Delta populated by local tribesmen grassing the rice fields, traditional swords in hand and wearing Ikat head scarves, winding through local villages to arrive at the magical setting of NIHI.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nihi Sumba family-friendly resort?

Nihi hosts many family groups with children and has become adept at taking care of kids while the parents are relaxing or taking part in activities. The activities suitable for children, depending on age and ability, include soccer, volleyball, snorkelling, boating, fishing, visiting villages, hiking to the waterfall, mountain biking, exploring the reefs on low tides and collecting fossils and shells. For younger children the resort has a nice child-friendly swimming pool and board games, as well as painting and drawing supplies, and beach toys.

Surfing at Nihi Sumba.

Nihi Sumba Island is host to one of the world’s most coveted waves. Even for the most experienced surfer, it presents a challenge because it is so sensitive to different conditions: tides, size, strength, and direction. Catching a good ride isn’t as easy as it looks, but once you make the right pick, the reward is a 200m to 300m long and often thrilling ride down the line through sections of ripple walls and heaving barrels. Nihi reserves the number of surfers to 10 per day, adding to the special experience. The wave has been a popular one for avid, recreational, and professional surfers for decades. You may want to consider a boat charter to cruise the coast and search for waves that are out there to be found. The best months for surf explorations are March to the end of April, and September through to November when the trade winds are low. Novice and first-time surfers can still get their feet wet with lessons on Nihiwatu beach, depending on the swell. Calmer waters can often be found at nearby Coconut Cove, where surfers can spend half a day with breakfast or lunch and do some light surfing, then be driven back to the resort. We would recommend to bring with you the following items: wax, extra heavy-duty leashes, booties, rash shirts, a surf cap, serious sunscreen, first aid kit, extra fins, and a travel-sized ding repair kit.

What could I bring to benefit the local community?

If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and bring supplies for area schools or medical clinics in need, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of Sumba's local children and families. General School Supplies: Book Bags, Erasers, Pencil Sharpeners, Pencils, Pens, Rulers, and Writing and Coloring Books. Sports/Outdoor Activity: Badminton Sets, Ball Inflation Pumps, Soccer Balls, and Volley Balls. First Aid/Health: Band-Aids, Bandages, Reading Glasses, Toothbrushes, and Toothpaste. Clothing/Shoes: New or Gently Used Baby Clothes (New Born and 0-1 Year), Baby/Swaddle Blankets, New or Gently Used Children’s Clothing (Ages 1-5), New Underwear (Ages 1-5)

What should I bring with me?

Casual beach wear is best for the day – T-shirts, loose lightweight long or short sleeve shirts and lightweight shorts or pants. For the evening, a lightweight sweatshirt, sarong, hat and sandals are ideal; comfortable walking or hiking shoes are also recommended. For horse riding all you need is long pants, and a pair of sports shoes and socks: (the resort has riding boots however bring your sports shoes just in case they don’t have your size). You will be riding quality well cared for Sumba / Australian Thoroughbred cross horses in English saddles. All levels of experience is catered for. For fishing Nihi has top-quality gear – Shimano rods, Okuma and Penn International reels – but if you are going to do some serious fishing you should take your favorite rod and reel. Many guests also bring their own lures, but often they are not suitable for the conditions at Nihi Sumba.

Is Sumba in malaria risk area?

Malaria is common in most of Indonesia, and Sumba is no exception. Nihi regularly fogging the resort and the surrounding area. The rooms have mosquito nets and are sprayed daily by housekeeping staff. Novice and first-time surfers can still get their feet wet with lessons on Nihiwatu beach, depending on the swell.
